7 old school cafés in Dublin you need to visit before they're gone

<3

SOMETIMES YOU’RE IN the mood for food from a good old-fashioned greasy spoon café.

So, where to go when you have a craving for a filthy fry?

1. Gerry’s, Montague Street

A city centre institution and one of the best places for a hearty feed.

Their menu consists of old staples like lasagne, cottage pie and burgers — all at a steal, we might add — but their breakfast is where it’s really at.

Divine.

2. Hobarts, Ranelagh

Also known as The King of the Hangover Breakfast.

For a dirty/delicious breakfast, you won’t do much better than this Ranelagh haunt. It’s like a mix between a traditional greasy spoon and an American diner, and it’s perfect.

Among its fans? Fine Gael’s Eoghan Murphy.

So now.

3. Brendan’s Café, Mary’s Lane

Brendan’s Café is tucked away behind the fruit market in Smithfield, but it’s an old-school gem worth seeking out. They do mouthwatering fries and comforting toasties wrapped in Brennan’s bread wrapping.

4. Cafe Sofia, Wexford Street

On a street that’s increasingly dominated by hip bars and restaurants, Café Sofia is a breath of fresh air, a place where you can get a properly excellent fry-up.

5. Matt The Rashers, Crumlin

The fry in this beloved Crumlin café (which now operates a branch in Clondalkin) is frankly the stuff of legend. A must visit.

6. TJ’s Coffee Bar, Parnell Street

This lovely little café on Parnell Street does excellent fry-ups and boasts excellent service from its owners. It may not be fancy, but it’s always delish.

7. Violet’s Restaurant, Lower Dorset Street

And finally, there’s Violet’s Resturant, which boldy proclaims itself to be the home of Ireland’s finest breakfast menu. With a top-notch fry, excellent breakfast rolls, burgers and club sandwiches, they might just be right.
